You know the "40+ hours" promise printed on the label. Nobody tells you what it is: a lab number, measured in still air, at 21°C, with a freshly trimmed wick, burned in 4-hour sessions. The first reference I pulled for this piece (precisecalculators.com) puts it plainly — real living-room results run 10–20% under lab testing. The second (soapcalcpro.com) shows the math behind the label: 226g of soy at 6g/hour = 37.6 hours. Round up, print it, sell it.

Now here is the number nobody prints. Burn rate is not the candle’s identity — it is the price of the atmosphere. I have watched a 69¢ paraffin tin outlast a 39€ "small-batch" soy by two days, and not because one of them is better. Because they make different deals with the same gram of wax, and one of those deals is far cheaper per hour of mood.

The three dials the label never mentions

Everything that sets burn rate lives in three places: the wax blend, the fragrance load, and the wick. Three dials, and the price tag tells you nothing about any of them.

  • Wax. By weight, paraffin eats 7–10g per hour, soy 5–7g, beeswax 3–5g. Same 8oz jar, paraffin burns 25–35% shorter than soy. Paraffin’s superpower is throwing scent — it holds more oil and burns hotter. It spends itself getting there.
  • Fragrance load. This is the silent killer. Scent oils flash off at lower temperatures than wax, and the hotter the pool, the more they drag the burn rate up with them. A 10% load is a normal spec; some "strong throw" blends push past it. You are not buying a candle. You are buying an oil burner that is wearing a candle costume.
  • Wick. Double the wicks, double the pool, roughly double the consumption — and the "full throw" marketing loves to tell you that was a feature. It is a cost multiplier you are paying for.

Do the math on your two jars

Two candles on your table right now, straight off the reference pages:

  • Budget tin: 8oz paraffin, ~227g at 8g/hr ≈ 28 hours. At 69¢, that is ≈2.5¢/hour of ambiance.
  • Premium jar: 8oz soy at 10% fragrance, 226g at 7g/hr ≈ 32 hours. At 39€, that is ≈1.22€/hour. Same room, same mood, and the "better" candle costs roughly 50 times more per hour of burn.

None of this is an argument against good candles. It is an argument for knowing which one you are lighting. Want a fast, dramatic burn for a party? Paraffin, higher load, bigger wick — you are paying for theatre, and theatre has a price per minute. Want a candle that is there every evening for a month? Slower wax, modest load, right-sized wick, and your 4-hour limit is doing its job.

The two-minute check that beats every label

Weigh the jar full. Burn it for a measured hour. Weigh it empty of flame. The difference is your real burn rate — not the average, not the lab, not the website. If your "30-hour" candle is losing 12g an hour, it is a 25-hour candle, and the label was rounding the way it wanted to round.

What people actually ask us

Does "soy" mean it burns slower? Usually yes — 5–7g/hr versus paraffin’s 7–10g/hr, all else equal. But a hot-loading, double-wick soy will still eat a budget paraffin’s lunch.

Why did my candle tunnel? The first burn never reached the edge of the glass, and the wax remembers. One full pool, roughly an hour per inch of diameter, fixes the trajectory for the rest of its life.
